today. >>> a group of newtown residents has formed themselves into a group called newtown united. there is not necessarily people who have been politically active in the past or who have had any experience trying to change policies or get certain law enacted. but some members of newtown united headed to washington today. they took the day off from their jobs. they woke up at dawn. they drove to washington to go meet with members of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence. newtown united, a group of people at the epicenter of national tragedy. one of the parents who traveled to washington today was lucky enough to have his child, who attends sandy hook elementary come home from that school on friday. but he said today that he is taking action now in the wake of the shootings because he does not think the next time it should just depend on luck. >> every time something like columbine, virginia tech were happening, i would avert my eyes, and i will still think that something will be done. but all those believes were shattered on friday. and now i think we all need to speak up. >>
to make sure there's some sort of infrastructure for when -- in particular, i'm involved with newtown united, a group trying to put together essentially an advocacy infrastructure for when they want to talk. they want to move the conversation. the national conversation to where i think a majority of people in america want it to go, on all matters related to gun violence. it's going to be there for them. and there's so many things like that that are happening, whether it's a memorial for the children and the educators, all that's going to happen. this community is going to rally around and support these people in any direction that they want us to go. >> and outside the community too. lots of support. robert cox writes for reuters "breaking views," and he's also a newtowner. >>> "outfront," next, student who survived a mass shooting in minnesota seven years ago drive to newtown, connecticut, to be with the sandy hook survivors. we'll tell you what they presented to the staff and students to help them cope. we remember the victims of sandy hook that lost their lives a week ago. i'm glad

, briefing reporters on what is going on. he, like the president of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest de

elementary. the school now cleared of shooters. newtown police say there's at least one other person shot. police telling abc news that they're still treating this as an active shooter situation. state emergency management officials confirming that ambulances and other units are en route and staging near the school. again, these are pictures from the park ing lot of the school. police also believe they may have located the suspect's car, again, as we just are getting information here, and again, it's sandy hook elementary school, about 15 miles from danbury, another major city in connecticut. two hours north and east offing new york city. >> obviously, of incredible concern is the extent of the injuries that may have occurred there at sandy hook elementary school. we do know according to the newtown bee on the scene that there was one child carried from the school by police, seriously wounded. another injuries have been reported we know that these emergency personnel gathered their enmass, the extents of the injuries unclear. according to the website of newtown school, afternoon buses and
